Balsamic Nectar Wins sofi Award

Balsamic Nectar Declared a sofi™ Award Winner

3,200 Products Competed for Prestigious Specialty Food Association Award

Balsamic Nectar from Boulder Flavours has been named a winner for Outstanding Vinegar in the Specialty Food Association’s 2016 sofi™ Award competition. A sofi is the top honor in the $120.5 billion specialty food industry. “sofi” stands for Specialty Outstanding Food Innovation and represents the best of the best from members of the Specialty Food Association. Balsamic Nectar was selected by a national panel of specialty food experts from more than 3,200 entries across 28 awards categories including Outstanding Chocolate, Cheese, and Savory Snack. Every eligible entry was carefully assessed by passionate and knowledgeable food professionals including chefs, culinary experts, academics, food writers, and category buyers.

“It’s a dream come true to be recognized with a sofi,” says Ben Powell, President of Boulder Flavours. “My goal was to create a product that would rival the finest Traditional Balsamic Vinegar products from Italy, but at a much more affordable price.  This recognition is very meaningful and supports our efforts to reach more consumers.”

“A sofi means a product, and the people behind it, have arrived,” says Laura Santella-Saccone, chief marketing officer for the Specialty Food Association. “This year’s honorees represent a devotion to excellence and innovation in specialty food that continues to fuel our industry.”

Authentic balsamic vinegar is made from grapes grown in Reggio Emilia and Modena, Italy.  A Traditional Balsamic Vinegar can cost as much as $100 per ounce due to the long aging process and scarcity of the product. Much of the balsamic vinegar sold in America is a low quality product, lacking the complex flavors of Traditional Balsamics.  Balsamic Nectar tastes very similar to Traditional Balsamic Vinegar, with a delightful layering of flavors, but at a fraction of the cost per ounce. Using an innovative aging technique developed by Boulder, CO engineer Ben Powell, Balsamic Nectar offers extraordinary flavor at a reasonable price. “Our goal was to create an affordable Balsamic, with traditional taste and complexity that acts as a sweet or savory addition to any meal,” said Powell. “With Balsamic Nectar, we’re proud to offer an accessible and exceptional choice for today’s chefs, cooking enthusiasts, and those who love flavor.”

When Powell was introduced to Traditional Balsamic Vinegar, that experience turned the engineer into an entrepreneur. “My first taste of a Traditional Balsamic Vinegar from Italy was a true flavor revelation. I had no idea that this gift from Italy would change my life,” said Powell. “I began exploring ways to produce a vinegar comparable to a Traditional Balsamic Vinegar but in far less time and, importantly, here in the United States.” Balsamic Nectar is produced in the foothills of Boulder, CO utilizing Powell’s proprietary method to age the vinegar. Using this new-world process, Balsamic Nectar requires several months of aging, compared to the twelve years or more it can take to age old-world Balsamics.

Balsamic Nectar is a completely natural product, made exclusively from traditional grapes of Modena, Italy, with no additives, preservatives, added sugars, or flavorings. It is packaged in an elegant bottle featuring a modern logo and clear labeling, all designed to celebrate the marriage of old-world ingredients with the twist of a modern-aged technique. Branded as The American Balsamic, Balsamic Nectar currently sells at retail locations in Colorado, through, and intends to be distributed in specialty shops and select grocery and natural foods stores nationwide.

The sofi Awards are open to members of the Specialty Food Association, a not-for-profit trade association established in 1952 for food artisans, importers, and entrepreneurs with more than 3,200 members in the U.S. and abroad.
